What is Pilates?
Pilates is a system developed by Joe Pilates which he called “Contrology” — the science of controlling the body. Using various pieces of equipment and body weight exercises, the system aims to teach the body how to move in all planes with strength and flexibility. It is beneficial to almost everyone including the deconditioned and high level athletes. Sessions take place in a fully equipped Gratz studio at the San Diego Tennis and Racquet Club.

What is functional training?
Functional training differs from traditional weight lifting by focusing on full body movements. Rather than isolating a muscle such as in a bicep curl, we aim to engage multiple muscles to work the way they were meant to in real life situations. Similarly to Pilates, functional training involves core activation to achieve movements necessary for the body to function well. There’s never a dull moment when you train with dynamax balls, Bulgarian bags, ropes and sleds, working out feels more like play.
Body optimization
Boost athletic performance by learning to connect the core to the extremities to harness power.
Relieve pain and prevent or recover from injury by working in proper joint alignment.

How long does it take to get results?
Many things will affect results - frequency, current fitness level, dedication, diet, among others. Joe said “In 10 sessions you will feel the difference, in 20 you will see the difference, and in 30 you'll have a whole new body.”
What’s the difference between reformer and mat Pilates?
The reformer and mat are only two parts of the system Joe Pilates developed. A true Pilates studio will feature a range of equipment including chairs, cadillacs, barrels, reformers, mats and other small devices. These things were designed for whole body optimization and give you a better workout that the mat or reformer alone.
How is Pilates different than yoga?
Joe Pilates did study yoga to develop his system and there are some similarities but Pilates aims to equally develop the muscles gaining stretch through strengthening opposite muscle groups. Core musculature is emphasized to maximize control of movement.
